About Poor Posture
Do you remember when your mother to you to”stand up straight!”? She knew what she was talking about! Having good posture is essential to overall good health. Your brain uses a lot of energy to control and coordinate hundreds of muscle groups anytime your posture is “sub-optimal.” Less than optimal posture can include a high shoulder, a forward stooping head, a rotated trunk (torso), a hunch back, a high hip, and a side-bent neck. You may experience abnormal posture as the result of trauma, such as a fall or car accident, repetitive movements (like turning your neck to look at your computer monitor), and certain bad postural habits (like regularly sleeping on your stomach).
Imagine a straight line drawn all the way from between your eyes down to your between your feet. Good posture requires having your body mass evenly divided on either side of this line when viewed from the front. When viewed from either side, you should be able to visualize a straight line that goes through your earlobe, shoulder joint, hip socket, and ankle.
Poor posture can lead to a number of problems. It can accelerate wear and tear on the joints, or osteoarthritis, as the result of uneven weight distribution. It can make breathing difficult by preventing proper expansion of the rib cage. This can lead to fatigue and a number of other symptoms. Poor posture, especially extreme forward head posture, can make the muscles along the back of your neck, shoulders and upper back feel sore. It can even cause lower back pain as the result of your spine struggling to counterbalance the forward position of your head.

Numbness or tingling sensations in the upper or lower extremities can be signs of peripheral neuropathy. The nerve roots that branch out from between the neck vertebrae joint and form the major nerves of the arms. The nerve roots located in the lower back join and form the major nerves of the legs. If these nerves, known as peripheral nerves, are compressed in any way, sensory disturbances can occur. In addition to numbness, such disturbances have been described as “pins and needles,” “prickly” or “tingly” and even “burning” in nature. In most cases, compression occurs at the spine as the nerve root exits. This can come from a bulging disc or a bony, arthritic projection.
