Most everyone experiences back pain at one time or another, but when you have severe pain that just won’t go away, a serious problem could be at play. A herniated disc is a relatively common cause of unrelenting pain in the back, and while minor herniations may heal on their own within a few weeks, more serious cases may require medical intervention.
Herniated Discs
Symptoms of a Herniated Disc
The bones that form your spine are cushioned by spongy discs that, when healthy, act as shock absorbers. When damaged, however, they may bulge or break open, resulting in what is known as a herniated disc.
The symptoms of a herniated disc may vary depending upon the location and the severity of the injury, but many patients experience pain in the back that may radiate to a limb. A herniated disc may also cause tingling, numbness, muscular weakness, burning or sciatica. The symptoms are usually only experienced on one side of the body.
Causes of Herniated Discs
The causes of herniated discs are numerous and include:
- Spinal injury. Physical trauma and accidents can force the material inside a disc to protrude, resulting in a herniation.
- Improper lifting. Major disc herniations often occur in people with jobs that require frequent lifting. Lifting while bent at the waist increases to likelihood of experiencing a traumatic disc injury.
- Wear and tear. As we age, our discs dry out and become less flexible than they once were, making them more susceptible to injury.
Treatment for Herniated Discs
In some cases, herniated discs heal on their own with no treatment, while in exceptionally severe cases, surgery may be needed. Most patients, however, benefit greatly from seeking chiropractic treatment for herniated discs. When you visit Denver South Chiropractic, we will carefully assess your situation and recommend a chiropractic care plan that will help your body heal naturally.
