How Chiropractic Can Help Tension Headaches
Just about everyone will experience a headache at one time or another. Though there are several different types of headaches, tension headaches are the most common. In fact, upwards of 75% of all headaches fall into this category.
Before you reach for the bottle of pain relievers, did you know that chiropractic treatment could be a safer and more effective solution to your problem?
For most people a tension headache can be described as a dull, constant achy feeling that affects one of both sides of the head. Often it feels like a tight band around the head or behind the eyes. In most instances, they begin gradually and can last for just a few minutes or for several days. Chronic tension headaches can last for several months. They most often start toward the end of the day, and they commonly occur as the result of stress or bad posture.
Causes of Tension Headaches
Tension headaches, sometimes also referred to as stress headaches, are often caused by subluxations in the neck and upper back and neck. When the top vertebrae in the cervical spine are out of alignment, the rectus capitis posterior minor, or RCPM, muscle spasms. This small muscle is connected to a tendon that slips between the base of the skull and the upper neck and attaches to the dura matter, which is sensitive to pain. When the RCPM muscle spasms and the tendon tugs at the dura matter, a headache typically occurs.
Referred pain from trigger points in the Sternocleidomastoid (SCM), or levitator, muscle located on the side of the neck can also cause tension headaches. These headaches are especially common in those who have suffered whiplash injuries because of the muscle damage sustained in the neck area.
How Chiropractic Can Help
Several studies have proven the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments for treating headaches, especially tension headaches originating in the neck. Though the exact course of treatment will vary depending upon the individual, research has shown that manipulation of the top two cervical vertebrae coupled with chiropractic adjustments of the junction between the thoracic and cervical spine provides significant improvement for tension headache sufferers.
