The Bottom Line: Are PRP Injections Effective?

We have been fielding a lot of questions about PRP – or platelet rich plasma – injections lately, and for good reason. Of course, one of the most common questions we hear is, “Does it work?”. If you ask many of our past patients, they will let you know that PRP injections made a huge difference in reducing their pain and restoring mobility, but what do the experts say?

Let’s take a closer look at the effectiveness of PRP injections.

What the Experts Say About the Effectiveness of PRP Injections

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the growing body of research regarding PRP injections is promising. Specifically, research indicates that PRP is effective in the treatment of chronic tendon injuries in the elbow area. In one of the largest studies of PRP to date, 230 patients suffering from tennis elbow using either PRP injections or traditional treatments. 23 weeks after treatment, approximately 84% of the patients who received PRP treatment indicated a reducing in pain of 25% or greater. Only 63% of the control group reported similar results.

Like other medical treatments for chronic tendon injuries, PRP does not guarantee a 100% reduction in pain for all patients. However, it is commonly used in conjunction with other treatments to provide patients with dramatic results. When used as part of a larger treatment plan for chronic tendon injuries, many patients do experience a significant decrease in pain and improvement in overall function of the affected area.
